Pool Games for Families with Young Children

Looking for ways to keep your little swimmers active, smiling, and safe in the water? I've put together a list of 10 fun and family-friendly pool games perfect for young children. Whether you're at swim lessons or enjoying time together at the pool, these games are a great way to build confidence and make lasting summer memories.

Pool Noodle Races

Kids "ride" pool noodles across the shallow end, using their hands or feet to paddle. Great for coordination and laughter!

Treasure Hunt

Toss sinking toys (like dive rings or coins) into the shallow end. Kids take turns retrieving them—no deep diving required.

Shark & Minnows (Gentle Version)

One child is the "shark" and tries to tag the "minnows" as they swim across. Use pool noodles for soft tagging and stay in shallow water.

Pool Basketball

Set up a floating or side-mounted hoop. Kids practice aim and teamwork by tossing a soft ball into the net.

Ring Toss

Float rings on the surface and challenge kids to toss small toys or balls inside. Simple, fun, and safe for all ages.

Red Light, Green Light

The caller shouts "green light" to start swimming and "red light" to stop. A playful way to improve listening and movement control.  This can also be played with kicks only while holding on to the wall.

Try adding:

Yellow light = Slow motion swim

Blue light = Blow bubbles

Purple light = Go underwater

Animal Races

Hop like a frog, glide like a dolphin, or float like a starfish—kids race while acting like their favorite water creatures.

Follow the Leader

One leader splashes, spins, or swims in fun ways while others follow. This game encourages imitation and creativity.

Ping Pong Ball Catch

Float ping pong balls (or any floating toys) in the pool and challenge swimmers to collect them into a bucket—fast and fun!

Pool Ball Push

Kids push a beach ball across the water using only their nose or head. No hands allowed!

Tip for Parents:

Always supervise closely, stay within arm's reach of young swimmers, and ensure pool toys are age-appropriate and safe.
